Lamb to the Slaughter

Greetings,

Lamb to the Slaughter is a short story. It is quite an interesting story.

One day, Mary Maloney was waiting for her husband, Patrick Maloney, in her house as usual. She was pregnant. Patrick Maloney came into the house. He acted very strangely that day. He was unusually cold to Mary Maloney. Then, he told Mary Maloney about something. The short story never specified what he actually said.Upon hearing that, Mary Maloney was very shocked.

Mary Maloney insisted upon preparing supper and went to the kitchen to take out a piece of frozen lamb. Holding the frozen lamb in her hands, she passed the living room, where Patrick Maloney was at that time. He refused Mary Maloney's offer to prepare supper for him and told her that he intend to go out. Without pause, Mary Maloney approached Patrick Maloney and hit the piece of frozen lamb onto his head hard. Patrick Maloney collapsed to the ground, dead.

Mary Maloney did not want to be caught by the police of the crime. Her once blurry thoughts had become very clear. She was trying to get away with this crime from the police. She decided to go to the grocery store. She went to practice in front of the miror before going to grocery store so she would not look suspicious. She bought some groceries and came back to the house. When she came back to the house and saw Patrick Maloney lying on the floor, she pretended to be shocked.

Mary Maloney then report the case to the police. The police arrived at her house not long after. Mary Maloney acted very naturally to the police. She was able to talk to the police with ease and was a most gracious host. The police was trying to find the murder weapon. Mary Maloney hatched out a very clever plan to conceal the murder weapon. She invited the unsuspecting police to consume the murder weapon which was cooking in the oven. The police ate it up and Mary Maloney got away with the crime.

What do you feel after reading the story? I hope you will give comments. I think that Mary Maloney is very calculating person and should be punished to the full extent of the law.

  2. It is an interesting story. Mary Maloney has committed a "crime of passion". As she was pregnant, I think that they should let the baby to be born first. However, the husband should also bear some responsibility as he had let his wife down. I think that he told her something devastating to their marriage, although the story did not specify.

There are some spelling mistakes: unsually-unusually; miror-mirror. Be more careful next time and happy blogging!

  3. Personally, i feel that Mrs Maloney is a cold- blooded murderer. One may argue that Mrs Maloney was afraid that she had to bring up the child herself hence her reaction. One might argue that she was pregnant and struggling to control her emotions triggered by hormonal changes in her body. Whilst I agree that those are fairly strong reasons to sympathise with Mrs Maloney, let me attempt to support my stand from the passage that was provided.

Mrs Maloney tried to get away with her murder when she could have just admitted her mistake to the police if she was innocent. She also acted very calmly when talking to the detectives. How can on remain so calm when she knows that she killed her husband. If it was me, i would freak out if the detectives asked me a question regarding the death of her husband.

This blatantly shows that Mrs Maloney is a cold- bloody murderer.

  4. In my opinion, Mrs maloney is a cold-blooded murderer and really should be punished to the full extent of the law. She killed her husband in cold blood using a frozen, heavy lamb-leg to club her husband at the back of his head, after hearing from her husband that he wanted to . This action of her is vicious and reflects badly on her, as this shows that she is a very rash person who would resort to any kinds of actions when agitated.
On the other hand, I also pity Mrs Maloney for doing so. Why is this so? She done this action because of one thing: Love for her husband. Jealous that her husband preferred someone ele and wanted to file for a divorce with her, and also that the fact that she loved the husband so much, it does not appear too shocking to me that she has done so.
Her husband, Patrick Maloney, I must say is a very foolish man to actually file for a divorce when he had such a beautiful, caring, doting and loving wife already. He did not spare a thought for Mary Maloney on how she might have felt. If he had been more considerate, all these freak incidents would not have taken place at all. - Darryl Chai (1A3) Hwa Chong Institution

  5. Personally, I think that Mary Maloney is a cold-blooded murderer. She is too sly and cunning to be considered as an innocent victim.
She deserves to be punished to the full extent of the law.

In the story, Mrs Maloney killed her husband using a frozen lamb leg after a small quarrel with him. Although the story did not specify, I think that her husband told him that he had to divorce her, or something shocking to their marriage. The steps she took to cover the murder was intolerable at all.

After killing her husband, Mary Maloney calmly hatches a perfect plan to hide her guilt by cooking the murder weapon, which is the lamb leg and serving it as a delicious meal to the policemen. Before that, she even went to the grocer's to develop a perfect alibi. When the police came, she acted calmly when being interrogated--much too calmly to be considered innocent.

There is no room to debate as to the guilt of Mary Maloney. She is a menace to the society and should be punished to the full extent of the law.
